Norwegian Film Institute

The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) is Norway's government agency responsible for film, drama and video games, and its advisor in policy questions. NFI provides funding for development, production, promotion and distribution. 

The Norwegian Film Institute was established by Parliament’s decision on 3 May 1955 and operates under the auspices of The Royal Norwegian Ministry for Culture. On 1 April 2008 the Norwegian Film Fund, the Norwegian Film Institute, Norway Film Development and the Norwegian Film Commission merged under the name of the Norwegian Film Institute (Norsk filminstitutt). Currently NFI has approximately 100 employees, organized in five departments: Production and International Relations; Strategy; Artistic Assessment, Development and Audience; Film and Society and finally Digitalisation and Operations. In addition, NFI has a dedicated Section for Video Games and MEDIA Desk. 

NFI administrates public grants and provides support for Norwegian features, shorts, documentaries, TV drama and video games. NFI also funds training and talent development in the audiovisual sector. The Film Institute represents and informs about Norwegian film on the national as well as on the international level and represents Norway in the European co-production fund EURIMAGES and in the European Audiovisual Observatory. 

The Norwegian Film Institute is a member of the international film archives’ organization FIAF, and of a number of other international bodies and organizations in the film sector, among them the International Council of Educational Media, European Film Promotion in addition to being a member of The Five Nordics, the organization for the Nordic Film Institutes.

MEDIA Desk is administratively linked to the NFI and is funded by the Ministry of Culture and the European Commission. NFI values its European collaborations highly and believes in strengthening European networks to maintain a strong sector for all European filmmakers.
